An Autumnal Present

While working outside this autumn, my eye caught a flash of pure yellow far up in the high pasture. Alas, it was a tree with leaves so brilliant they took my breath away.  I stopped what I was doing and trekked excitedly thru the tundra.

As I got closer I blinked . . . and blinked again.  A maple?! Were my eyes deceiving me?  Where had this jewel come from?  Good grief, I had never noticed it before!  I ran back to the house to grab my camera and Stan Tekiela’s Trees of Minnesota.

Sure enough, it was a Black Maple badly in need of trimming and TLC.  I completely devoted the next day to the care of this unexpected treasure.  I can only imagine a seed blew in from my neighbor to the north’s farm and, with the grace of God, took hold in the most desolate region of my pasture.

What a wonderful gift!  There is nothing as thrilling as discovering a brand new tree . . . and a true beauty at that!

  1. You did a wonderful job with the maple tree! Maple is the symbol of Canada, as you know. So glad you discovered the treasure on your land. A few days ago, we were visited by a red-breasted nut hatch. He was so delightfully beautiful and so charming!
